Transmission repair vs. Transmission Rebuild. Repairing a transmission is normally the cheaper of the two. It does not require removing and disassembling the entire transmission. It may however require removing it, replacing select defective components.
Standard leaks from gaskets, oil seals, and transmission cooling system components will account for many of these transmission repairs. On automatic transmissions, defective electrical components or valve body issues may be repaired or replaced on the vehicle. On manual transmissions, a repair would be a situation where a transmission is grinding in 2nd gear and a syncro is replaced. The rest of the transmissions components are inspected but remain untouched unless they show signs of heavy wear or damage.
