A differential is also known as the 'Final Drive Gear'. This is the largest of the gears in the vehicle that has a direct line to the drive wheels via the axle shafts or C/V joints. On a FWD vehicle, the differential is located within the transmission. On a RWD vehicle, It is located at the rear of the vehivle directly between the rear wheels. Its purpose is to transfer power from the drive shaft to the wheels directly. On a 4WD there are 2 differentials. 1 lies between the front wheels and 1 between the rear wheels. (refer to 4X4 diagram). These are the basics.
